Brentford’s new club-record signing Igor Thiago is expecte to only return to action at the end of 2024 following successful surgery on a knee injury.
The 23-year-old Brazilian forward suffere a meniscus problem on July 20 after scoring twice during the Bees’ 5-2 friendly victory over AFC Wimbledon.
Thiago joine the Premier League club at the start of the month, having agree his reporte £30million transfer from Club Brugge in February.
“The striker will now begin a period of recovery and rehabilitation and is expecte to return towards the end of the year,” read a statement on Brentford’s website.
Thiago scored 18 goals across 34 league outings last season to help Club Brugge win the Belgian title.
He previously playe for Bulgarian club Ludogorets after beginning his career in his homeland with Cruzeiro.
Thiago joined Brentford from Club Brugge where he shone in his single season with the Belgian club.
In only his second season in Europe, with his first in Bulgaria with Ludogorets, the 23-year-old scored 18 times in 34 Jupiler Pro League appearances as Club Brugge won the title.
Thiago also netted seven times in the 2023/24 UEFA Conference League and was name the tournament’s Player of the Season.
Brentford’s next pre-season match is at Watford on Saturday, before hosting Wolfsburg six days later.
They begin their Premier League campaign at home to Crystal Palace on Sunday 18 August.
